The Toll Tax Order for 2025 was revised by the Government of India, which introduced fresh toll exemptions and simple policies providing some relief for the daily commuters and specific categories of vehicles. Such a move is inclined towards reducing the cost-burden on the agencies which deliver essential services, thereby encouraging the operation of environment-friendly transport systems along National Highways.
Major Changes In Toll Tax Rule
With the Toll Tax regime so operative from 1st April 2025, a large bunch of vehicles have been exempted now from paying toll at any one of the toll plazas operated by the NHAI. This Notification has been issued by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways after due consideration of the feel of the existing toll régime and the reforms made therein.
Toll-free Vehicle In 2025
The categories of vehicles exempted from toll fees are as under:
1. Electric Vehicles:
For a cleaner and greener country, toll fees are waived for all Electric Vehicles registered in India so as to encourage environment-friendly transport.
2. Ambulance and Fire Brigade:
According to the revised rules also, the toll exemptions are for ambulances, fire trucks, and police patrol vehicles.
3. Two Wheelers:
In favour of the lower economic strata, the toll on motorcycles and scooters on most National Highways is now declared as withdrawn.
4. Vehicles within 20 km Radius of Toll Plazas:
Private and commercial vehicles registered within 20 km of a toll plaza can avail themselves of complete toll exemption after submitting the appropriate documents to the toll operator.
5. Defense and Government Vehicles:
Previously established exemption rules continue to apply to vehicles belonging to armed forces and paramilitary forces and those owned by central/state governments.
How To Avail Exemption
Owners eligible for the exemption should apply for a toll-free FASTag on the official operational portals of NHAI or FASTag issuing banks. Documents for application include vehicle registration details, category proof, such as an EV certificate, and residential proof under the 20 km radius clause.
Conclusion
The Toll Tax revision for 2025 is a much-deserved people-friendly and sustainable initiative by the government. By exempting important vehicle categories, the scheme aims to support those who use the roads on a daily basis while also aiding environmental conscience and efficient road usage. Motorists are, therefore, requested to stay updated with the NHAI portal from time to time and go through the application procedure wherever applicable.
